Why Stand?

The Healthy Desk is an online retailer providing an alternative for sitting all day at work by offering height adjustable sit/stand desks to improve your health and increase productivity for the high achiever.

Our desire at The Healthy Desk is to empower you with the best information to make an informed decision on a healthier, more productive lifestyle at work.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics states that the average American works 8.8 hrs per day or 44 hours per week. In 2014, a national Gallup poll put those average numbers at 47 hours per week or 9.4 hours per day, with many saying they work over 50 hours per week. Adding seven hours of sleep per night gives you 15.8 hours of being sedentary.

According to Karen Basen-Engquist, Ph.D., professor of Behavioral Science at MD Anderson, studies show that the effects of sitting for extended periods puts a person's health at risk even if they engage in a regular exercise program. Some of these health risks found were colorectal, ovarian and endometrial cancers, and non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma as well as increased risk for obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

The health hazards and risks associated with sitting all day are numerous, effecting your joints, muscles, and every part of your body.

Contrarily, standing all day can also have negative effects on your body. A UK study suggests individuals spending most of the day on their feet every working day are at greater risk of health problems including varicose veins, poor circulation and swelling in the feet and legs, foot problems, joint damage, heart and circulatory problems and pregnancy difficulties.

The most commonly reported symptoms appear to be discomfort, fatigue and swelling in the legs. Workers required to spend too much time on their feet are at greatly increased risk of pain and discomfort affecting feet, shins and calves, knees, thighs, hips and lower pack.

Why am I telling you the negative effects of standing when we offer stand up desks as a solution to better health and higher productivity?

Our desire at The Healthy Desk is to empower you with the best information to make an informed decision on a healthier, more productive lifestyle at work.

With most things in life, moderation is key. At The Healthy Desk, we offer Height Adjustable Sit/Stand Desks as well as ergonomic chairs and stools. We believe that the key to being healthier and more productive at work is by alternating throughout the day between sitting and standing, as well as other physical activities such as taking the stairs rather than the elevator, parking a distance from the front door, taking a walk at lunch ( outside or around the office) and staying hydrated.

The reason I started The Healthy Desk was from personal experience. I was working, sitting, at my desk working on our non-profit organization and noticed how much my back, neck and shoulders hurt. I improvised a temporary stand up solution and immediately noticed an improvement on how I felt and increased alertness ( particularly after lunch ) which led to improved productivity. However, I did notice increased pain in my feet and legs from standing. The best solution, personally, has been alternating between sitting and standing throughout the day.

I hope I have given you enough information for you to decided if investing in a height adjustable sit/stand desk is the right decision for you.

Respectfully,

Jeremy Boyles I Founder
